How We Strategically Mix & Match Patterns for an Interesting Space

Mixing patterns inside your design plan can elevate a space and create a more cohesive and interesting room. Here is my 5-step process when using patterns that will guarantee your success.

Step #1: Play Around with a Curated Color Palette

My first step is to create a palette for the space or work with the existing color scheme. In a new build, we already have sourced the first layer of neutrals during the build portion. For a client who has an existing space, we will explore your color palette at length before our initial meeting so we arrive on a solid foundation for a single room or a whole house design plan.

Step #2: Decide on the Essential Design Bridge Element

The next step is selecting the bridge, A Bridge in interior decorating is any element(s) that help tie things placed on one surface, with things hung up on another. Or within patterns, I choose the "Hero" pattern. This pattern will bring the other colors and patterns into harmony. This can be a bold wallpaper, paint color, a rug, or artwork. If the client already has a bridge or "Hero" we will use that as a jumping-off point and layer alongside it. Combining patterns and juxtaposing will add interest and create balance across your interior.

Step #3: Source Items in an Assortment of Scales

Keep in mind the pattern's scale and the space's scale. Bold and large patterns can make a small room feel smaller, sometimes that is okay if you are looking for a cozy vibe. Patterns also have scale and mixing small, medium, and large patterns makes them come to life. Choosing a base such as a pinstripe or solid and then adding in a bold pattern or nature-inspired print, then adding in some smaller patterns in rugs, drapery, or cushions, filling in the gaps and creating balance, character, and depth.

Step #4: Test the Design Using Tried-and-True Tools

We typically share our pattern combinations with our clients via the initial physical mood board presentation using swatches alongside the samples for the entire room. Often, we will add these elements to the final 3D renderings which helps our clients get a real sense of what the space is capable of.

Step #5: Incorporate it All for a Thrilling Install Day

We love to watch the faces of our clients on "Reveal Day"! When they see the finished home with all of the elements coming together they realize trusting us was worth it!

In conclusion, pattern, and there are a lot to choose from, when paired together correctly, can really elevate a space, add interest and bring personality to every space.
